Synopsis

The story of a clever, free-thinking woman, living in a world ruled by men, during a period that suffered two of the greatest cataclysms of the twentieth  century - the Great War and the Russian Revolution.

London 1913. At an avant-garde party in Chelsea Alice Fry, the independent-minded daughter of a radical publisher, meets Edward Cobb, the eligible young son of a baronet, who has recently quit the army to pursue his political ambitions. They fall in love and plan to marry. When Alice's father becomes involved in a scandal, it becomes clear that Edward must choose between Alice and his political career. He breaks off the engagement, unaware that his lover is expecting his child. At the Derby, Alice meets Baron von Rettenberg, who has travelled to England to acquire the legendary racehorse Saladin - and an English governess. He invites Alice to return to Russia with him to take charge of his children...
